Long-Lewis begins

The Long-Lewis name first appeared on a Bessemer hardware store in 1887. In 1911, owner William J. Long added Ford automobiles to the business. When Ford began granting franchises in 1915, Long-Lewis Hardware was among the first dealers to receive one.

1921 · The Shoals

Henry Ford and Wilson Dam

Long before modern highways connected north Alabama, the Shoals was at the center of American industrial ambition. In 1921, Henry Ford made a widely discussed offer to acquire the federal Muscle Shoals properties, including the unfinished Wilson Dam and nitrate plants which began construction during The First World War. He imagined a major industrial center powered by the Tennessee River. Congress did not accept his offer. Wilson Dam was completed in 1924 and came under the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1933.

1996 · Muscle Shoals

A local chapter and a Florence headquarters

In 1996, Long-Lewis partnered to open its Muscle Shoals location. That Shoals chapter grew into a local automotive family and a base for expansion into other Alabama communities. In 2019, Long-Lewis moved its corporate headquarters to Florence’s SunTrust Building, choosing to keep its home base in the Shoals. Today, I’m proud to help customers at Long-Lewis Ford Lincoln in Muscle Shoals.

Tucked along the Tennessee River, The Shoals built a worldwide reputation through FAME Studios and the unmistakable sound of The Swampers. That creative spirit is still part of what makes the Shoals special.
